I am intrigued to report that Nora BodySkins & Fashions will officially close one week from now.  Sounds pretty doom and gloom, I know, but trust me when I say "this is a good thing".  Or don't, it's up to you!

Four years ago, I joined the world of Second Life and quickly put together a little business to call my own.  I became an obsessive "store owner".  The truth of the matter is I'm a very bad businesswoman.  There's certain things required to run a business.  I'm not very good at any of them, really.  I enjoyed it for a while, but near the end I had to force myself to upkeep it.

If that wasn't bad enough, I'm pretty frustrated at the stagnation Second Life has continued to experience over the years, under Linden Lab's reign.  Hey, I'm not saying we haven't gotten new toys - I am saying that our old ones are still covered in mud.  Since most of my SL creation is based around avatar skins, and there have been no real improvements regarding that - I'm just kind of exhausted with hacking and slashing away at it all.  Vendor problems, customer service, dealing with broken tools... I just don't feel like doing it anymore.
My faith in Linden Lab has officially run dry.  Sorry folks.  So with that, Nora will be closing permanently.  Please make a note that any new whatever claiming to be "Nora" from one week from now, is not my work.  If I ever return to the SL business world, it will be under another business name.

Now that the negative is out of the way, onto the positive....

All skins will be on sale for the next week('til Monday night, 8-18).  $100 a pop like my usual sales.  When the week is up, the store will go poofies.  Some of the accessories will become freebies and be available from a small nook in Miramare.  The Entice 3.0 skin is NOT just disappearing into the void.  It will morph into something entirely different.  Are you ready?

**I will be releasing new skins as .PSDs under a attribution/share-alike license.  This is similar to what Eloh Eliot has done.  In doing this, I will be able to both enjoy creating, at my own pace, for Second Life no matter what Grid it's being used on.**

In addition I will release new layers that can be added onto the base skin .PSDs.  Like, makeups or scars or tattoos.  And all you have to do is combine them.  I also want to release some tutorials on how to do it all, and how to add your own fun things to them.  Approaching skins from this angle will not only remove the cost entirely from my skins, but allow you to customize them however you want.
What I have not decided as of yet is whether or not I want to allow commercial redistribution of these altered skins.  It's a very fine line to walk upon in my desires and goals with this new project.  I will, of course, entertain any opinions regarding this particular detail.  So, share away.  This website will be updated in about two weeks, give or take, and it will house these new resources.  My blog will remain intact, I'll just be adding onto it.
The previously beta-tested Entice 3.0 will be the first of these skins and will be rebranded.  More skin details will be uncovered as I make my decisions regarding them.  I'm excited about this and look forward to producing future work for your use in Second Life and its sister Grids.

My personal thank you goes out to everyone who has ever bought a Nora skin, supported Nora in any way, and cheered me on during the last four years.  I can only hope my new contributions will be as appreciated as much - you folks make me smile!
To those who might think I'm leaving Second Life: I'm not.  I'm just not going to develop content for in-world sale.  I'll be taking it easier, enjoying being a PART of Second Life, and will still be DJing on Tuesdays.  Hey, maybe I'll see some of you in world instead of being holed up in a studio somewhere cursing vendor scripts.  That'd be a nice change of pace, wouldn't it?

See you soon!

Hmmm what if you just sold a very plain skin base and then did the tutorials to show people how you made your own. Then in turn you could charge for the tutorials. Not sure if that made sense. That way, you aren't given full rights to your skins but to a simple base and folks learn to do their own. No matter what you decide, imma always be a fan and follow your site when it's up. Good luck in whatever you decide.

I think you should allow commercial use, because the truth is, even if you don't, the skins WILL be for sale within the first few days of release. The difference is if you allow selling, honest people can work on the bases, use parts of them in their own unique creations, and learn from them.

@Daman: I wasn't necessarily stating that it had to be "x amount of work" ... and as I said, I am not even sure that I agree with myself at this point.Regardless of what license Sezmra puts on the PSDs, whether it's no commercial use at all, or commercial use with a capped selling price, it's my opinion that it will be absolutely overwhelming, if not downright impossible to enforce. The sad fact is, that if these PSDs are released "into the wild" that some unscrupulous person, probably many unscrupulous people are going to be putting them up as-is, with zero modification to them at all, and selling them.I also am 100% convinced that Sezmra already knows this, though, too. I remember reading about the multiple times her skins were stolen without her actually releasing the source files. So not only was someone else selling them, claiming Sezmra's hard work as their own, but they didn't have any kind of permission to be doing it! :(What I also am 100% sure will happen is that, eventually Nora skins will make their way to every BIAB, to every freebie box, etc across the grid. It would be a fan-freaking-tastic skin to have as a new player! (Or an old player!) They are gorgeous, after all. :) But everything always has its good and bad points. Essentially, I just suggested allowing some commercial use (with a cap, or with SOME modification [not necessarily a set amount]) because whether it's allowed or not, people are going to do it. It sucks that people are like that, but I've been in SL too long to be able to turn a blind eye to that behavior. At least then, if some commercial use is allowed, maybe it will "encourage" at least a few of them to respect the original artist's wishes. I mean, it's a piss-poor compromise, but... either way she goes, I believe Sezmra will either have to ignore it, or be constantly battling it. (Unauthorized commercial use, I mean.) The other alternative is to not release the PSDs.

Lol i understand u well, it takes more time and is more stressing set up all than doing the skins. Refering for comercial use, I think u won't find the peace u want if u don't allow it, then will become more in fill DMCAs, cos as soon as u post the psds, u can be sure that the skin will be in all the grid, the only thing is that legal shops won't use/sell. For my side I think lot of people used eloh skins in bad manners but I am proud she did that give and I learned a lot from their skins and I think Eloh is happy just to see some people used the skins the way she wanted. But well all depends on u, if u think ur babys alredy became adults to face the world :)
This makes me quite sad-- I send everyone I know to Nora for skins, because they truly are my absolute favorite in SL. But, as long as you're happier in SL, then I'll live with it. ^^

that's great about the PSD files but just be warned...it's hard to track and make sure they are being used accordingly. I put in only one little specification in mine that they please release a PSD of their own and link back so we can all learn. I released two so far, with more on the way. Granted, mine ARE heavily tweaked Eloh files...but still. Nothing. I didn't really expect anything to be honest. So as long as you realize that your skins could end up BBIAB, or sold as is or whatever, whether your license agreement allows for it or not...then it's all good. And on the flip side are those who really learn from your PSD's and tutorials (GIMP one in the mix on this side...I haven't found any yet and it will involve how to play with already established files since when I started, if it wasn't for Eloh and another friend commenting on my call out for help...I never would have learned) and I think it's great your trying to give back a bit! Good luck on your new venture! Misty, who is not really annoymous, just haven't logged in yet

I think setting a capped fee - or saying they can also ask money if they modify at least x amount of the skin - is even harder to enforce than saying no commercial use at all. Just my 2 cents.

I'm sorry that you are closing. I love your skins, especially the lips.:) But I'm really glad to hear about the psd. files. Thank you so much for the work you have done so far and for the psd. files.:)

Hi again. :) Sorry ... I only wanted to add that the primary reasons that I say allow people to charge a "capped" fee for their modifications, their own work, is just because ... ya know, I don't even know that I really even agree with myself anymore. That's sad. ;) Look at what has happened with Eloh Eliot's lovely files, though. It was generous of her to offer them AND to even say "Hey, sell 'em if you want to" - but I guess because she allowed it at all, the whole crowd who wants that BIAB/Instant Business thing, where they don't need to do any work at all but rake in the dough, they started selling her PSDs as is and everything else! It's a tough thing to consider, Sezmra, in my honest opinion. The "realistic" side of me says, you might as well be at least a little bit permissive about the whole "sell 'em if you want to" thing, because otherwise it'll be a non-stop fight, but the side of me with artistic integrity says that people shouldn't be earning money off work that isn't their own! Such a tough call... but I won't lie and say I'm not anxious to make my own custom Nora skins (for my own personal use), either! :)

Wow. I will head in and buy all the facial hair options for the Hunter Espresso in this sale. I've used the shaved version for about 9 months now, the longest I've ever used a skin (though I changed to a TheAbyss skin about a week ago) I look forward to your PSDs and the tutorial. I've been trying to mod Eloh's PSDs, but so far not doing a great job really - the tutorials would help a lot. As far as your dilemma - I would propose not allowing commercial use of the opensource skins. But it's your (ideological) decision. I myself release all my stuff under Creative Commons 3.0 NonCommercial-Attribute-ShareAlike

Dear Sezmra, I love your skins to pieces, and think you do some of the loveliest hand-painted skin work in all of SL. And you have to die for lips. ;) You said that you were open to suggestions regarding commercial redistribution of your "base" work, and that you'd like to hear what people had to say... so I'm going to throw my hat into the ring here, and tell you what I think. In my honest opinion, if anyone should create skins based on your files, with their own modifications, which are outside the realm of compositing your own layers as-is, they should be allowed to sell their derivatives, provided that there is a significant amount of change and their own personal "blood, sweat and tears" involved. I hope that that makes sense. I think, if all they are doing is combining your layers/options as-is, then they should not be allowed to sell your work. I also am of the opinion that if someone is selling derivatives that are significantly changed, that perhaps you might want to consider a "maximum sell price" or something of that nature. To be honest, I think you are quite amazing for even considering releasing your PSD files. Your work is beautiful, it really honestly is, but if you do release your work as PSD files, you will have to deal with the fact that there are unscrupulous people in SL, which I know that you know already, having been the victim of content theft. If you have a "restrictive" license, that does not provide for selling of modifications at all, then I really believe that you run the risk of spending a lot more time enforcing your license than might be desirable. :( However, with that said, it is of course your option, entirely. I just believe that if you provide for the ability for people to sell their own modifications (if it is their own work), that at least it would significantly reduce the amount of people who you had to deal with to enforce your license. Regardless of your ultimate decision regarding your licensing, I still think you're wonderful for considering it at all. ;)
I'm really sorry to hear you're closing, Nora. As another "obsessive store owner", I can completely understand your feelings. When your fun starts to feel like real work, it ought to start paying like real work, or there's other fun things to do instead. I really do hope that you please, please, please think the licensing through better than Eloh did! I think its wonderful to give the community more quality skins to play with and customize and learn about how theyre made, but I would hate to see yet more legions of "Instant Skin Business-Just Add Water" popping up like mushrooms all over the grid. Its tough enough making an honest go of it as it is. Either way, they're your babies to do with what you want, and I'm sure it will be very much appreciated by everybody.

Very cool news, Sezmra! I'm glad it'll be a way for you to enjoy yourself more in SL. My only sorrow is the fact that no new male skins are on the horizon from Nora. *sniffle* But the PSDs of the Entice 3.0 will certainly be very popular as yet another learning tool. Regarding your question as to whether commercial usage is allowed, the reality of the situation seems to me that once the PSD is out there, enforcement of a no-sale clause will be as onerous as trying to run a store. The principle of the thing is nice, and personally I'd hate to see it used commercially without your say-so, but the fact is that the number of people who'll misuse it is very, very large. Eloh couldn't even get people to keep her license with her skins without it becoming a headache. Looking forward to the associated tutorials, as well. I've never quite managed doing a good-looking scar on a skin. Cheers, Ran Garrigus

Awww Sezmra! I am very very sad to hear you won't be a "businesswoman" anymore but totally understand where yo uare coming from. It's AWESOME thing that you are doing with your PSD's and I would like to thank you for making so many lovely, gorgeous skins for the last few years, I think I probably own all of them in one tone or another. So yes, I am sad, happy, a bit more sad but most of all i'm thankful to you for being so lovely and awesome everytime we've crossed paths, and I hope your SL becomes more what you would like it to be. xxx Willis
