Challenging yourself
I did some work today on a new hairstyle that I dreamt up.
It's nothing too new, impressive, or cool, but it isn't all over the place - yet. The popularity of flexi-prim hair is really skyrocketing, which leads me to...
Trends in Second Life are fascinating beasts. Just like in "RL", trends come and go, and many stay rooted in the scalp of this virtual world. Prim hair is a good example. It isn't going anywhere. The current trend for skins seems to be photo-realism. Flexi-prim fashions are now a big new trend. This isn't to say that all trends don't have some basis. They don't just pop out of nowhere and are the "next big thing". They slowly gain momentum and ZOOM! take off into the dark atmosphere floating above our little avatars' heads.
As much as I consider myself not-so-trendy, we need trends in a way. They propel forward expectations in creativity. They show us what people like, and give us[content creators] an opportunity to either provide for that new popularity, discover something about our own creative nature, or give us a chance to make it[the trend] even better. Unfortunately, the possibility to jump in that trend and make it a rut is there, too.
It's something designers have to keep in mind.
